Fibre Optic Network Fault Detection fluke

Fibre Optic Network Fault Detection

Using OTDR measurements, we quickly identify faults in fibre optic networks and accurately locate the affected section.

Measurement. Fault detection. Rapid restoration.

Fibre optic network fault detection makes it possible to identify the potential cause and location of data transmission problems without dismantling the system or replacing the entire cable. Our company inspects fibre optic networks in industrial facilities, business sites, office buildings, server rooms, data centres and service provider networks. Using advanced OTDR measurements, we detect fibre breaks, faulty splices, high-loss connections, and losses caused by excessive bending or mechanical stress. By analysing light reflections and backscatter, an OTDR can determine the location, attenuation and type of individual events along the fibre optic link. Depending on the network configuration and measurement conditions, we can inspect fibre optic connections up to 10,000 metres in length. Based on the results, we identify the faulty cable section, connector or splice point and recommend the necessary repair. We manage the entire process, from fault detection and repair preparation through fibre restoration and repeat testing to documented handover.

OTDR Fault Detection

Using OTDR measurements, we locate fibre breaks, attenuation faults, defective splices or excessive bends along the optical fibre. By analysing the measurement trace, we provide a detailed overview of the condition of the entire cable route.

Fibre Optic Network Testing

We inspect the length, attenuation, reflective events, connectors and splice points of fibre optic links. The test can be used both for the commissioning of new networks and for fault detection in existing systems.

Repair and Retesting

Based on the identified fault, we carry out or prepare the necessary cable repair, fibre splicing and connector replacement. After restoration, we perform repeat measurements to verify that the fibre optic connection is operating correctly.

FAST AND ACCURATE FAULT DETECTION IN FIBRE OPTIC NETWORK

A fault in a fibre optic network does not always mean a complete break. Excessive attenuation, a kinked cable or a faulty splice can also significantly degrade data transmission. We therefore inspect the network along the full length of the cable, taking individual splices, connectors and cable sections into account. OTDR measurement can display and locate breaks, splices, connections and other optical events along the fibre. Based on the measurement results, targeted repairs can be carried out, avoiding unnecessary excavation or replacement of the entire cable route.

OTDR Measurement

During an OTDR measurement, light pulses are transmitted into the optical fibre from one direction, and the returning signals are then analysed. The measurement indicates the cable length, the distance of individual events and the level of optical loss. This allows faults along long or difficult-to-access cable routes to be located more quickly.

Locating Fibre Breaks

In the event of a fibre optic cable break, we determine the distance of the fault from the measurement point. This significantly narrows down the area to be inspected along underground, indoor or inter-site cable routes. When determining the exact physical location, we evaluate the instrument results together with the cable route documentation and on-site conditions.

Bending and Attenuation Faults

Excessive bending, kinking or mechanical stress can cause significant signal loss even without a complete cable break. We identify abnormal attenuation events and potential macrobends on the OTDR trace. Based on the measurement results, the affected network section can be inspected and repaired in a targeted manner.

Inspection of Splices and Connections

We inspect the attenuation of fibre splices, joints, patch panels and connection points. Based on the measurement results, faulty or poor-quality connections can be distinguished from correctly functioning network components. Where necessary, we recommend re-splicing, cleaning or connector replacement.

Measurement Range of up to 10,000 Metres

Our measurement service enables fault detection and condition assessment for fibre optic cable links up to 10,000 metres in length. We adjust the settings to the fibre type, network length and expected events. The appropriate measurement range, pulse width and evaluation method support the reliable identification of distant faults.

Measurement Report

We prepare clear measurement documentation containing the cable length, the identified events, their distances and attenuation values. The report supports repair planning, network handover and future comparative measurements. A documented network condition makes operation and future fault detection faster and more efficient.
